Artist Statement

My studio practice is grounded in observation of nature, sustained inquiry, material exploration, and ongoing conceptual development. I am drawn to the experience of space in nature, the interdependence of background and foreground, and the relationship between organic and geometric forms as a way of organizing a unified whole that both reveals and withholds meaning. In my work, structures observed in the natural world are synthesized into forms that reference both architectural space and the natural environment. These forms function as conceptual structures, an armature that supports and invites contemplation. Although a visible structure guides the work, it develops organically through an intuitive response to the interaction of shapes and layers of paint. My work originates in sketches, drawings, observations of nature, and memory. No photographs or technology are part of my creative process.
